GRIMM, Amsterdam (NL) is pleased to present a series of new iPad paintings by Matthias Weischer, a new medium that the artist has been exploring in recent years to expand his distinctive observational technique capturing interior spaces and the domestic realm.
One of the foremost painters of his generation, Weischer lives and works in Leipzig (DE) where he trained at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. Best known for his atmospheric still life works and layered, collage-like application of oil paint or egg tempera to explore ideas around perception and our psychological relationship to our surroundings, Weischer has always returned to the still life and honed his technique through drawing scenes repeatedly, staging his studio in the style of his own painterly compositions.
Weischer has been increasingly drawn to the iPad as a medium to extend this drawing practice; painterly yet digital, the artist describes it as a completely different medium but one that allows capacity for discovery, subtlety and experimentation. Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong will present the first solo exhibition in Asia of well-known contemporary painter Matthias Weischer. Considered one of the single most important contemporary German artists today, Weischer has gained critical acclaim for his participation in the Leipzig School, a movement linked to the modern revival of figurative painting.

Pearl Lam Galleries launch their autumn programme in Hong Kong with a major exhibition of historical works by New York School painter Robert Motherwell to celebrate the centenary of his birth. Motherwell was a principle figure in the development of Abstract Expressionism, a leading spokesman for avant-garde art in America, and a champion of the theory of automatism and free association. His circle included Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, William Baziotes, David Hare and Barnett Newman. The exhibition will be the first major show of Motherwell’s work in Asia and will include 15 works including works from his important Great Wall of China series.
