Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and adventurer who was born in the Republic of Genoa between August 25 and October 31, 1451. He made four remarkable journeys across the Atlantic Ocean under the patronage of the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II of Spain. These journeys marked the beginning of European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
