1In , when Ezra Pound was incarcerated in the Disciplinary Training Center at Pisa, Italy, he received and began annotating a page Catholic Prayer Bookfor Army and Navy.1 In this paper, I will present a description and brief analysis of The Prayer Book and Pound’s annotations in it. Pound’s use of The Prayer Book provides insight to his application of the ideogrammic method in linking Confucianism to Catholicism. Furthermore, the Prayer Book provides evidence in support of an essentially religious reading of the Pisan Cantos.
2Subtitled “Pro Deo et Patria”—“For God and Country”—the Prayer Book measures approximately 3x5 inches; its cover is of a brown, textured card stock, and the internal leaves are of a standard bond paper. Originally published in by the Paulist Press in New York, it includes sections of the Roman Catholic Mass, as well as prayers intended to inspire soldiers or sailors facing death in time of war. A new translation of a book exploring the Bible’s foreign and divine language is a spirited defence of the sacred, poetic Word, says Nick Ripatrazone.
Michael Edwards – a London-born professor and poet – was elected to the prestigious Académie Française in There he serves as a defender of the French language. In this volume, The Bible and Poetry, Edwards is a defender of the Bible as an extant text; a living, rich representation of the Word.
The book originally appeared in French in as Bible et poésie, and is translated into English for the first time by Stephen E Lewis, an American theologian who has translated works by Jean-Luc Marion. Anglophone speakers are in luck: Lewis’s translation is fluid and deft, and is one of the finest works to be published this year.
Edwards puts down his stake with the first sentences: “We do not read the Bible as it is meant to be read. Theology always risks leading us astray by elaborating its own discourse, with the biblical texts merely as a point of departure.” The Bible, Edwards notes, teems with poetry – both moments that are poetic in mode as well as outright verse.
