Sir Joseph Wilson Swan – His Life and Inventions Author Peter A. Leyel, DFH,C.Eng.,MIEE Abstract Joseph Wilson Swan (1828-1914) publicly demonstrated his first practical incandescent electric lamp in 1878. Leaving school aged 13, he became interested in both photography and the possibility of using electricity to create light. In 1845, Swan joined his friend John Mawson in Newcastle, subsequently becoming a partner in the firm of Mawson and Swan. Initially, this company produced collodion used in wet plate photography. In 1864, Swan patented his carbon process for photographic printing. Although achieving incandescence of a carbon filament as early as 1860, the first practical lamp had to await the invention of Herman Sprengler’s vacuum pump. In his lifetime, Joseph Swan was granted over 30 patents, covering not only photography, the incandescent electric lamp, but also improvements to the lead/acid storage battery, electric safety lamps, and creating filaments of nitro-cellulose, which led to the development of artificial silk. Swan was elected an FRS in 1894 and was knighted in 1904. Early childhood. Sir Joseph Wilson Swan: physicist, chemist and inventor
John's teaching experience has been in primary and secondary schools and in April 2009 he retired after twenty-one years as a primary headteacher. He trained at Ripon College (Leeds University) and completed an MA in Primary Education at the University of York. As a Research Associate with the National College for School Leadership, and with their sponsorship, he completed his Doctorate in Education in 2010 and worked for the Open University, tutoring 'Children's Literature' and 'Learning and teaching in the primary years', until 2020. Now fully retired, John volunteers for the National Trust and enjoys cycling and sailing. Through his talks, John raises funds for One World Welfare Mission School, in Manak Village, Pakistan.
