In high school, he excelled in basketball and was one of the top rated tuba players in the country before being drafted by the NBA while attending college in Alabama.
"I really didn't think I had a future in tuba. How many people call tuba players to play on their album," Tankard said. "As a basketball player, I thought I was God's gift to stop Michael Jordan."
But a devastating injury at the Portland Trailblazers pre-camp in 1983 shattered the 6-foot-6-inch player's dreams.
"I busted my knee up the first play of the first practice. Of course they waived me and sent me home," he said. "It was very, very depressing because being raised all my life in poverty, you kind of look forward to eating every day.
"The NBA was going to be my way to get consistent steaks on the table," said Tankard, who was born and raised in Daytona Beach and grew up in Starke. "When that didn't happen, I just kind of fell apart."

MURFREESBORO — Gospel/jazz instrumentalist Ben Tankard won his first Stellar Gospel Music Award as New Artist of the Year in 1989. With a career spanning three decades, the musical pioneer has earned the title of “Godfather of Gospel Jazz” and he earned his 14th Stellar Award recently in Las Vegas. Tankard took home the honor for Best Instrumental CD of the Year for his "Full Tank 2.0."
