    Birth place: Palmyra*, WI, United States
    Notes: Gary Congdon started racing at nineteen in 1956, driving his first race at Sun Prairie, WI. In 1965 he joined USAC and drove in nine sprint car and six champ car events, including the 1966 Indianapolis 500, where he qualified sixteenth but was involved in the pile up involving eleven cars during the first lap, causing the race to be red-flagged.

    On 24 September 1967 Congdon entered the Autumn 50, a USAC midget event at the Terre Haute Action Track, located at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, Indiana. Congdon won his heat, ahead of Gary Bettenhausen. On the tenth lap of the feature race an accident involving drivers Rick Davidson, Bob Greentree and Bill Renshaw happened in front of him. Congdon tried to avoid the crash by swerving to the inside, but a wheel of one of the three crashed vehicles hit him inside the car. Congdon's car went through the inside guardrail into the infield striking a photographer, who luckily received only minor injuries. Congdon died of head injuries. He was the third competitor killed at Terre Haute, after Stan Bowman and Jackson Hagemeyer, both in 1962.
