Donald Knaack is an American percussionist. He performs on and composes for recycled materials exclusively.
His album Junk Music was nominated for a Grammy Award, and he has played in many prominent venues worldwide, including the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Vans Warped Tour, the Sundance Film Festival, the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, the Kansas City International Jazz Festival and more.
Biography
[edit]Donald Knaack (aka The Junkman) is a classically trained percussionist and composer who has used recycled materials as his instruments of music since long before the eco-green movement was cool. He calls it Junk Music and it all began with his mentor and collaborator, John Cage encouraged the further development of his attraction to the sounds of found objects. He's performed at Lincoln Center, The Van's Warped Tour (with Eminem, Black Eyed Peas and Blink-182), The United Nations, The Kennedy Center, Sundance Film Festival, concerts with Phish, Seoul Drum Festival, Summer Series Dubai, many schools and colleges and a solo concert at the United Nation's COP 16 Conference on Climate Change in Cancun, Mexico, where he was awarded the "Cantando por el Planeta" award by the Federal Government of Mexico for is HOP (He

Biography:
Donald began his musical life as a chorister in his local Parish Church and subsequently learned piano and trumpet.
He was a member of his local youth and community orchestras as both player and conductor. He began composing at age 13 and at 17 entered the Royal College of Music to study composing and conducting. In his second year he was awarded all five composition prizes, most notably the Cobbett Prize for his first string quartet performed by the then newly formed Chilingirian Quartet. His principal professors were Humphrey Searle and Alexander Goehr.
He became Resident Composer at the Royal College of Art Film School and began composing for film and television at age 19, while still a student. His first film, for the Shell Film Unit was nominated for a BAFTA (British Film Academy) award. It was at this time that he composed and co-produced the music theatre work “Why Tears, Achilles?” based on the translations from the Iliad by Christopher Logue. This was subsequently to become a 3 hour radio drama programme for the BBC and revived as “War Music” for the Old Vic Theatre Company. The production toured internationally.
