This article is about the Roman emperor. For other uses, see Hadrian (disambiguation).
Hadrian (HAY-dree-ən; Latin: Publius Aelius Hadrianus[(h)adriˈjaːnus]; 24 January 76 – 10 July ) was Roman emperor from to Hadrian was born in Italica, close to modern Seville in Spain, an Italic settlement in Hispania Baetica; his branch of the Aelia gens, the Aeli Hadriani, came from the town of Hadria in eastern Italy. He was a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty.
Early in his political career, Hadrian married Vibia Sabina, grandniece of the ruling emperor, Trajan. The marriage and Hadrian's later succession as emperor were probably promoted by Trajan's wife Pompeia Plotina. Soon after his own succession, Hadrian had four leading senators unlawfully put to death, probably because they seemed to threaten the security of his reign; this earned him the senate's lifelong enmity. He earned further disapproval by abandoning Trajan's expansionist policies and territorial gains in Mesopotamia, Assyria, Armenia, and parts of Dacia. Hadrian preferred to invest in the development of stable, defensible borders and the unification of the empire's disparate peoples as subjects of a panhellenic empire, led by Rome.

He handled the calamitous legacy he inherited from Trajan with a wise policy. Modern authors regarded his time in power as a smile of fortune on Roman Empire. While compiling a biography of Hadrian, the references are the remnants of works by ancient authors, and epigraphic and numismatic materials. Even though epigraphic and numismatic materials are numerous, information we get from ancient sources are rather limited. The most important of the sources giving information about Hadrian are the Rhomaika written by Cassius Dio in the first quarter of 3rd Century AD, and the emperor biographies which were written in the last quarter of 3rd Century and known as Historia Augusta. Both works are indispensible for a biography of Hadrian. Therefore, this study aims to give, along with information about Cassius Dio and his work. Also, the information he provides in the biography will undergo a critical evaluation with reference to other sources about the Hadrian reign.
