Popularly known as India's latterday Jim Corbett and 'tiger man', 87-year-old Billy Arjan Singh is by any standards an extraordinary man. At Tiger Haven, his home in a magical spot on the edge of the jungle in UP, Singh's experiments with bringing up three orphaned leopards, and also Tara, a tiger cub that he imported from a zoo in England, shot him into both limelight and controversy. Internationally known wildlife expert Billy Arjan Singh died on late Friday night at his home Tiger Heaven in Dudhwa National Park in Lakhimpur Kheri located 250 km north of Lucknow. He was 94.
Born in Gorakhpur (UP) on August 15, 1917 Arjan Singh was a hunter before becoming a well known conservationist. He was decorated with several national and international awards including Padam Shri in 1995 and Padam Bhusan in 2006and J Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Award. He was an author of various popular wildlife books.
Arjan Singh belonged to Royal Ahluwalia dynasty of Kapurthala. In 1940 Singh was commissioned in British Indian Army as second lieutenant. He retired in 1946 as lieutenant and settled in Dudhwa National Park.
